Vestibular testing is a specialized service using specialized equipment to determine the site and presentation of dizziness and balance disturbances.<\/span><\/p>\n

ABR (auditory brainstem response) diagnostic and audiological testing is available at Waterfall and Rosebank HEARCARE PLUS<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

ABR tests use highly specialised equipment to determine the response of the brainstem to sound. These tests are especially used with babies and small children to obtain a formal diagnosis if hearing loss is suspected.<\/span><\/p>\n

Waterfall and Rosebank HEARCARE PLUS are equipped with highly specialised tests that assess the vestibular system in the inner ear and how it coordinates with eyes and the brain for balance.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

The following tests are available at Waterfall and Rosebank HEARCARE PLUS to assess the vestibular system:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  • VNG (Videonystagmography)<\/li>\n
  • Calorics<\/li>\n
  • VEMPs (Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials)<\/li>\n
  • ECoghG (Electrocochleography)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The tests take approximately 2 hours and can give information on the vestibular system and its coordination with the brain and the eyes. The tests can help to determine whether the dizziness has a possible peripheral origin (i.e. the ears) or a central origin (i.e. the brain), and can also drop to determine which side is affected left or right<\/p>\n

    Appointments for the tests are generally made at least 2 days in advance as there are instructions that must be followed from 2 days before the test. We send an instruction sheet once the appointment has been made detailing the test and explaining certain medications and substances that cannot be taken before the test.<\/p>\n

    Videonystagmography (VNG)
    \n<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

      \n
    • VNG is the most commonly used test to evaluate the vestibular system (balance portions of the inner ear, nerve, and brain). Eye movements are used to evaluate the balance system. Patients are asked to follow a moving light with their eyes and sit and lie in different positions while the eye movements are monitored with goggles.<\/li>\n
    • Air Calorics is when the ear canals are irrgated with small amounts of warm and cool air.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
