Misdiagnosed?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to the World Health Organisation approximately<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/deafness-and-hearing-loss\"> 466 million people have a hearing loss<\/a> that is considered disabling. Of the 466 million, <strong>34 million are children.<\/strong> In 2009 it was recorded that between 4 to 6 of every 1000 babies born within the public sector in South Africa will have a hearing impairment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While we do not know exactly how these statistics have changed today, we do know that an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/38089281_The_effect_of_mild_hearing_loss_on_academic_performance_in_primary_school_children\">undiagnosed hearing loss<\/a>&#8211; even a mild hearing loss- decreases a child\u2019s academic performance at school. In addition, this hearing loss causes a multitude of socio-emotional difficulties.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>A child with a hearing loss in the classroom will :<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>frequently ask for repetition<\/li>\n<li>inappropriately respond to questions<\/li>\n<li>present with speech difficulties and language delays<\/li>\n<li>struggle to follow instructions<\/li>\n<li>present with a general restlessness or lack of concentration on the task required<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>These symptoms may<a href=\"https:\/\/www.health24.com\/Medical\/Hearing-management\/Hearing-in-children\/could-hearing-loss-be-the-cause-of-my-childs-poor-academic-performance-20180709-2\"> initially look like a learning problem<\/a> such as ADHD. Annual hearing screenings for all learners and full hearing tests for individuals struggling in their academic performance is therefore essential. These assessments not only prevent a misdiagnosis, but they allow for the appropriate intervention to improve school success and ultimately a learner\u2019s individual growth and happiness.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to the World Health Organisation approximately 466 million people have a hearing loss that is considered disabling.
